A 19-year-old man was shot in Brussels, highlighting a surge in gun violence linked to territorial disputes among drug gangs. Authorities found the victim in Anderlecht with a thigh wound; his condition is stable. The city has seen numerous shootings recently, with 11 incidents reported in just six weeks. Citizens are alarmed by rising lawlessness, prompting calls for enhanced police presence. The new government plans to merge police zones to better address violence. Additional incidents, including a robbery at a jewellery store, underscore the challenges facing the capital regarding public safety.
"The investigation is ongoing in order to determine the circumstances of the events, the context in which they occurred and to identify the perpetrator(s)," the prosecutor said.
Security officials have said that the violence was bound to trickle into other cities in Belgium, amidst growing concerns over lawlessness in Brussels.
