New food waste collection service in Havering 'will cost millions to set up'

The initial cost for Havering Council’s food waste collection initiative will be around 3.8 million, with ongoing maintenance costs between 2.5 million and 3 million yearly.
Council leader Ray Morgon emphasized the need for additional government funding, stating that the council is working under the assumption of no extra financial support.
Strategic director Kathy Freeman highlighted the importance of adequate funding for the new food waste service, which aims to reduce overall waste for the community.
Local authorities need to implement a separate food waste collection by March 2026, as part of a new legal requirement.
