The Metropolitan Police is confronting a significant budget shortfall of £260 million for the upcoming year, despite an additional £118 million from the government and £10 million from the Mayor of London. This funding decreases their gap from £450 million, yet substantial cuts are inevitable, including reductions in personnel and services. A possible reduction of up to 2,300 officers and staff is under consideration, alongside cuts to specific units and services that may impact policing efficiency across London.
While this new funding decreases our original funding gap from 450m, it leaves us with a 260m shortfall and we will have to make substantial tough choices.
The Met said that among other efficiency savings, it planned to reduce its workforce bill by 185m, which would impact the amount of officers and services available.
