"My view is it was a good example of officers showing policing common sense without fear or favour and doing a good job. So I am grateful that the committee notices that."
"I particularly want to congratulate you on your female officer, who I think it was in Whitechapel, actually reminded people what the meaning of free speech is. I really would like to commended her and I would love to see more police officers actually doing that."
"The officer tells the group: I understand that you guys don't want to hear it, so I would just recommend that you walk away and don't listen to him. He's not in your home."
A female Metropolitan Police officer in Whitechapel, east London, intervened during a confrontation between a Christian preacher and local residents near the East London Mosque. When confronted with claims that the area was Muslim and the preaching was unwelcome, the officer advised the preacher's opponents to simply walk away rather than engage. The incident, recorded and shared on social media, drew commendation from Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist and Conservative City Hall leader Susan Hall for exemplifying common sense policing and upholding free speech principles. The encounter occurred on Whitechapel Road, yards from one of Western Europe's largest mosques.
