The Mayor of London has announced a £2.9 million Greener Schools programme to fund renewable technologies like solar panels and heat pumps in 38 schools across 16 boroughs. With an additional £9.6 million from councils, the initiative aims to save schools around £15,000 annually on energy bills while also promoting projects focused on water conservation and insulation. Mayor Sadiq Khan envisions this pilot leading to a national adoption of similar measures, ultimately helping schools allocate funds to essential resources and reducing carbon emissions in the city.
This investment will help schools reduce their energy costs, so they can spend more on vital resources such as books, technology and staff, and cut carbon emissions so schools can play their part in tackling air pollution in the capital.
If all of London's schools were to use similar energy-saving interventions, this could save over 50m annually from the education budget.
