The mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, expressed his criticism of Chancellor Rachel Reeves' Spending Review, describing it as a significant mistake to create conflict between London and the rest of the country. While he acknowledged a record funding boost for Transport for London and praised significant investments in multiple areas, he lamented the lack of resources for new infrastructure projects like the DLR extension. Khan emphasized the importance of London's success for the entire nation and urged for unified support rather than divisive budgeting tactics from the government.
The good stuff I welcome after years of lobbying we have got a record-breaking deal for Transport for London. We have got on average a more than doubling of the amount of money received from the government compared to the previous government.
I think it is bad that this government is not supporting new infrastructure in London like the extension of the DLR, which would help us not just create new jobs but build record numbers of homes.
I think it is ugly this idea of pitting London against the rest of the country - I think our country succeeds when London does.
There are mixed feelings about the chancellor's announcement last week, with some good, some bad, and some ugly aspects noted by the mayor.
