Lewisham and Greenwich hospitals make more than 7m worth of surgical errors
Briefly

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is experiencing an increase in claims related to surgical errors, rising from 13 claims in 2019/2020 to 23 recently. The total payouts in compensation have reached 7.49 million over five years, including 2.54 million in the latest year alone. Across the NHS, there have been 11,700 claims for surgical errors, with treatment failures as the leading cause. Healthcare professionals acknowledge the complexity of these cases, suggesting that not all complications signal negligence, but require careful evaluation and proof.
The trust has paid a significant amount in compensation for these claims, with 2,543,579 paid out in 2021/22 alone.
We work hard to maintain high standards for our patients, but there are occasions when complications regretfully arise.
Although they appear on the surface to be straightforward cases, surgical errors are much more complex than that and can cover a number of situations and outcomes.
Medical Negligence Assist provides support to patients who may have suffered from a surgical error and can help ascertain if they have grounds to submit a claim.
