The Labour Government's first year has been marked by a significant decline in housing construction in London, with reports indicating a drop to a 16-year low. Parliamentary housing committee chair, MP Eshalomi, criticized Housing Secretary Angela Rayner for not disclosing how many of the promised 1.5 million homes would be social-rented, suggesting political fear of criticism. Despite Rayner's assertions that the government will deliver a record amount of affordable housing, specific targets for social housing remain elusive due to the complexities of site viability. Prominent figures, including Mayor Khan, acknowledge the urgency of improving housing supply.
"We're almost a year into the new Government, since July - that's a year we've lost," the MP said, highlighting the stalled housebuilding efforts in London.
"Providing a national target for new social housing units is not feasible," Rayner stated, emphasizing the variability of site affordability and viability.
