Kensington and Chelsea cracks down on abandoned e-bikes - operators fined 3,000
Briefly

Kensington and Chelsea council has initiated a crackdown on abandoned e-bikes obstructing pavements, seizing 42 bikes from Lime and Forest as part of the enforcement. The operators were charged over £3,000 for removal and storage. The enforcement, particularly focused on hotspots like Walton Place, has led to a significant decrease in resident complaints. Council officials support e-bike rentals but stress the importance of public safety, urging operators to ensure proper bike management and to foster considerate behavior among riders.
We remain supportive of rental e-bikes but there is a line. Where abandoned bikes are putting pedestrians and drivers in danger we are acting now to remove them.
It takes a fair amount of officer time to enforce in this way, so I am relieved that the trial has shown that operators are willing to cough up to cover the costs.
