The Gadz cafe, once dubbed 'the Corbyn Cafe' due to its frequent patronage by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, has closed its doors after 24 years in business. Owner Hussein Jabar faced multiple challenges, including a robbery and disruptive crowds that deterred customers. The cafe became uneconomical to run. Jabar fondly recounted Corbyn's humble visits, where he was oblivious to the MP's status, and praised the cafe's offerings. Having fled Lebanon due to political threats, Jabar's experiences form a poignant backdrop to the cafe's story and its closure.
"When I first met him fourteen years ago, I served him a cappuccino and he came back again and again. I didn’t know who he was and we joked."
"The cafe used to be known as the Jeremy Corbyn cafe, not the Gadz cafe," remarks Hussein, who founded his coffee bar 24 years ago.
