Residents of Balfron Tower, a listed building in Poplar, are facing severe issues due to repeated failures of their lifts, which have become a source of anxiety and frustration. Since last September, the lifts have malfunctioned at least twice a month, compelling residents to climb significant flights of stairs to access their homes. This situation escalates anxiety regarding emergencies, particularly for those on higher floors. Residents are speaking out about the challenges of living in the building, especially when they feel unsafe during the lift outages and worry about emergency responsiveness from firefighters.
Harper, a resident living on the 24th floor, expressed frustration about paying £2,500 a month for a two-bedroom flat without a working lift, stating that it almost takes him at least ten minutes to walk to his home when the lifts are out of order.
Peter Yu, a resident with a spinal injury, shared his agony after trying to climb stairs during a lift outage, describing the lifts' condition as "one minute on, one minute off," and expressing his helplessness regarding the situation.
