Inside 'mind-blowingly good' plans for new cycle lanes in central London
"Whether its on Lime and Santander bikes or good ol' fashioned non-electric two-wheelers, London is truly in the age of the cyclist. And the capital getting more cycle-friendly all the time, with TfL delivering 51 kilometres of new cycle lanes this year and more than 1,500 new bike parking spaces. Soon another London area will be getting easier to use for cyclists - this time it's Holborn, right in the centre of town."
"The project is called the Holborn Liveable Neighbourhood, and it began surveying Camden borough residents back in February 2024. This week the council revealed images of what the area could look like if new pedestrianisation and cycle lane ideas are approved and adopted. Camden Council has drawn up a series of 16 images that would completely change the vibe of these central London streets. Think cleaner air, loads of trees and swish paved pathways for pedestrians and cyclists alike."
"Among the most impactful plans could see Great Russell Street (located between Museum Street and Montague Street) become completely pedestrianised, thereby potentially opening up seating up for local businesses. Great Ormond Street could get one-way lanes for westbound traffic while prioritising larger pavements for pedestrians, and New Oxford Street could also be pedestrianised with two paths - one direct route, and another more scenic, winding path."
The Holborn Liveable Neighbourhood project proposes radical redesigns of several West End streets to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. Camden Council began surveying borough residents in February 2024 and has released 16 images illustrating potential changes. Proposals include full pedestrianisation of Great Russell Street, one-way westbound traffic on Great Ormond Street paired with wider pavements, and two-route pedestrianisation of New Oxford Street offering both direct and scenic paths. Additional measures would add protected cycle lanes, more bike parking, increased trees, cleaner air, swish paved pathways, and seating opportunities for local businesses. Camden residents are invited to share feedback while proposals remain under consideration.
