'If receiving a fine upsets someone's trip to Waterford then hard luck' - chair of Wexford council reluctant to support review of speed signage on N25
The N25 at Glenmore has a speed limit reduction from 100 km/h to 80 km/h, with a fixed speed camera positioned in the 80 zone. Wexford County Council reports that up to 200 people per day receive fines, prompting a motion requesting Kilkenny County Council to review signage and improve motorists’ awareness of the speed change. A councillor says the approach road and the lack of clarity between 80 and 100 zones create a hazard, affecting many families. The motion also calls for removing a large billboard behind the camera. Wexford’s chair expresses reluctance to change anything that could increase speeds, citing ongoing road death concerns.
"Two hundred people a day are getting traffic fines, if that many people are getting fined there's clearly something wrong with the approach road at that location. Road safety is paramount and there are 84 families who are suffering as a result of speeding at that location but between the signage and people not knowing if they're in an 80 or a 100 zone it is in itself a hazard. I would ask Kilkenny County Council (KCC) to review it and let people know what speed they're supposed to be going at, and to remove the big billboard behind the camera as it's offputting."
"At the area in question the limit reduces from 100 kmh to 80 kmh with a fixed speed camera located in the 80 zone. The positioning of this camera has been a source of much controversy in recent months with countless drivers receiving fines for exceeding the limit."
"I would have reservations about this considering we are at 60 road deaths this year. As a county council our responsibility is the prevention of road deaths, and if receiving a fine upsets someone's trip to Waterford then hard luck."
"But this is a unique sign in a unique position. If you're coming into that area and you're not familiar"
