History behind lost Hornchurch pub with sports-inspired name
Briefly

The article explores the rich history of The Cricketers Public House in Hornchurch, which opened its doors in 1830 to honor the local cricket club founded in 1783. It replaces an earlier establishment, The Bull, listed by local magistrates between 1770 and 1782. The pub narrowly escaped destruction in a 1928 fire that burnt a neighboring shop. Over the years, The Cricketers underwent several name changes, including O.J.'s and George II, before finally becoming The Rising Sun, which closed in June 2023.
The Cricketers Public House, opened in 1830 in High Street, honored the local Hornchurch Cricket Club, reflecting its significance in the village and Essex.
Despite a fire in 1928 that threatened its existence, The Cricketers continued to serve the community until its final transformation into The Rising Sun in 2018.
