Hammersmith Flyover could be demolished for tunnel
"had adverse consequences, cutting off Hammersmith Town Centre from the River Thames, severing the traditional Victorian street pattern and creating large amounts of traffic"
"Any project that comes forward will need to carefully consider this in detail against the construction methodology and design of any tunnel to ensure these impacts are minimised,"
"This will also have to be weighed up against a do-nothing scenario, which would involve substantial traffic disruptions associated with regular maintenance or upgrading of the flyover."
Hammersmith and Fulham Council's draft Local Plan proposes demolishing the 1961 Hammersmith Flyover and replacing sections of the A4 with a tunnel or "flyunder" to reconnect the town centre with the River Thames. The proposal aims to release land for development, reduce noise and pollution, and restore the Victorian street pattern severed by the flyover. The council plans a 15-year timetable targeting adoption by November 2027 and intends to work with TfL and stakeholders, funding the tunnel by monetising freed land. A 2013–14 feasibility study estimated around 18 months of traffic disruption during works.
