A wanted poster offers a reward for information on a woman connected to a crime, as tensions mount over China's plans for a new mega-embassy in London. The proposed site, opposite the Tower of London, is already under surveillance by Chinese security. Carmen Lau, a pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, expresses fears that an imposing embassy will facilitate harassment of political dissidents. Local residents and activists worry about security risks and potential espionage due to its location near the financial district. The UK government is considering approval after a prior rejection by the council.
The new premises, opposite the Tower of London, is already being patrolled by Chinese security guards. The building is ringed with CCTV cameras too.
Carmen Lau, who fled Hong Kong in 2021, argues that the UK should not allow China's 'authoritarian regime' to have its new embassy in such a symbolic location.
There are also worries, among some dissidents, that its location - very near London's financial district - could be an espionage risk.
The plans had previously been rejected by the local council, but the decision now lies with the government - and senior ministers have signalled they are in favour.
