Freak London weather: Moment rare waterspout rips across Thames in 'close shave' for veteran sailor
"I have never seen anything like this in the 41 years of sailing on the River Thames. I was very apprehensive as I did not know if the spout was going to come towards our boat."
"The water was spinning like a garden sprinkler. Fortunately, it continued across the river to the Richmond bank where it went upstream and then disappeared."
"It was so strong it rang the bell. I looked up the river to where the boats were nearer the opposite bank and past the dinghy park."
Warren Gordon, a 68-year-old veteran sailor, experienced a rare waterspout while participating in a race on the Thames. The incident occurred on April 26, shortly before 3:30 PM, as he sailed his dinghy. Gordon noticed ripples and spray indicating the approaching spout, which he described as spinning like a garden sprinkler. Fortunately, the waterspout moved across the river without hitting his boat. Assistant Race Officer Zoe Van Den Bosch also felt the strong winds from the spout, which caused concern among the race officials.
