Foreign worker who put 1,239 work visa on City Hall expenses rumbled in fraud probe - as 9million agency staff bill revealed
Briefly

A foreign agency worker attempted to claim the cost of a UK work visa incorrectly by labeling it as flight expenses. The worker submitted multiple claims, attempting to reclaim 1,239, exceeding the allowed expense limit. An internal investigation revealed the claim should have been covered by the sponsoring organization rather than the agency worker. Critics have raised concerns regarding the Greater London Authority's policy on covering immigration visa costs for temporary staff, especially with the mounting cost of agency workers at City Hall. Increased monitoring measures are being discussed.
The near breach of the Greater London Authority's financial rules only came to light following a chance investigation by its internal counter fraud team.
One expense claim for 1,239 was coded as 'Travel via flight,' however, this expense was a claim for a Certificate of Sponsorship from UK Visas & Immigration.
Somewhere along the line, the process slipped a bit with regards to that payment.
The GLA does cover the cost of work permits for foreign workers but this is normally done by a manager using a corporate credit card.
