"For the first time in its roughly 800 years, this year's Lord Mayor's Show in the City of London will be changing its name. No, they haven't succumbed to the modern trend of selling naming rights to a corporate sponsor. The reason is nicer - the City has elected a Lady to the post of Lord Mayor and she has decided to be known as the Lady Mayor."
"She's not the first lady to hold the post of Lord Mayor, as there have been (just) two predecessors - Dame Mary Donaldson (1982) and Dame Fiona Woolf ( 2013), but they both decided to retain the title of Lord Mayor while in office. Last week, the City elected Dame Susan Langley DBE as its third lady to hold the post, and she has decided to be known as the first-ever Lady Mayor of London."
"but slow evolution is usually better than hasty revolution - so after a few ladies held the title, and the world didn't collapse (arguably), it was time for the title to change as well. And of course, that means that everything that was the Lord Mayor will become the Lady Mayor. Therefore, this year, the Lord Mayor's Show will become the Lady Mayor's Show, and the Lady Mayor will ride in the 268-year-old Lady Mayor of London's State Coach."
The City of London will rename the Lord Mayor's Show as the Lady Mayor's Show for 2025. Dame Susan Langley DBE was elected as the third woman to hold the post and will use the title Lady Mayor. Two earlier women held the post but retained the title Lord Mayor. The Lady Mayor will ride in the 268-year-old Lady Mayor of London's State Coach. The name change marks the first such change in roughly 800 years and sets a precedent for alternating the Lord/Lady title. The Lady Mayor's Show will take place on Saturday 8th November 2025.
