Fierce criticism after Galway beach is strewn with litter - 'It says a lot about us as a society'
Ireland’s hot spell ended on Wednesday evening as temperatures dropped and conditions turned mixed. Many Galway locals went to Salthill to enjoy the last sun, but large amounts of litter were left on the beach afterward. A Galway City West Labour councillor shared images showing the extent of rubbish left behind by thousands of visitors. He said he had spoken to the council’s environment section about the need for extra bins during good weather. He thanked people who did litter pick-ups before the mess was washed out. He also said bins were emptied regularly and community wardens were present, but the remaining litter showed that a “drop it and walk away” attitude does not work in a proper society.
"This was the beach last night left by those who enjoyed the weather yesterday. I've spoken to environment section of council about need for extra bins during good weather,"
"The bins were emptied regularly yesterday, the community wardens were in force out there trying to get on top of illegal parking and all that kind of stuff,"
