Fear is rising regarding a potential surge in crime in London's Royal Parks after the decision to dissolve its dedicated police team as part of budget cuts by the Metropolitan Police. Currently, around 80 officers protect these iconic areas, but they will be integrated into local teams to address a significant funding deficit. The Royal Parks charity expressed disappointment over this decision, emphasizing the historical importance of dedicated police presence in maintaining safety for millions of visitors. Local officials are concerned that diminished oversight will invite criminal activity, particularly targeting vulnerable park users.
We are disappointed with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) decision to close its dedicated Royal Parks police unit. The Royal Parks MPS unit and its predecessors have been a massive part of the rich history of the parks in London for over 150 years.
I hope that we won't be seeing dire consequences, but we have already seen organised criminal gangs targeting cyclists when they know that the police aren't on duty and this could open the door to further acts like that.
