Peter Dazeley, a photographer in Morden, faced a fine for what he believed was a good deed—collecting discarded plastic bottles for recycling. He was penalized for fly-tipping after he attempted to drop off large sacks filled with bottles at the Recycling Centre, which the council classified as commercial waste. Despite appealing, Merton Council upheld the fine, emphasizing businesses' responsibility for waste disposal. This incident highlights the difficulties faced by individuals trying to contribute positively to environmental efforts, raising questions about the council's response to community recycling initiatives.
Apparently, I did the wrong thing by bringing big sacks that wouldn't fit in the bins, but I thought the recycling trucks would easily be able to pick up clear plastic sacks filled with plastic bottles.
It has been a beyond disappointing experience. The recycling has stopped, and now all the bottles will go into landfill.
