Developer urged to sell protected ancient woodland
"shut off to the local community for about 25 years"
"valued at 60,000"
"There are about four local schools all within a 10minute walk of this space who want to use this space, including one school, Turnham School, where most of the children don't even have access to a garden."
"if they have planning permission to build 28 houses"
Gorne Wood in Lewisham is designated Metropolitan Open Land containing 500-year-old trees and endangered species but has been neglected and closed to the community for about 25 years. AA Homes owns the site and has not responded to requests; Lewisham Council is urging the owner to sell the land at fair market value while acknowledging its protected status and without specifying a buyer. Campaigners say a reported £3 million price is unjustified, estimate the site at about £60,000, and the Fourth Reserve campaign has raised £130,000 to try to secure the land. Local schools want access, a former scout hut is close to collapse, and the site is littered; one prior planning application was rejected and planning permission remains absent.
