"The station was not part of the original Crossrail plan, but was added later with a housing developer picking up the cost of building the box, and additional funding from Greenwich council towards the cost of fitting it out. As the station was built on a fairly tight budget, funds were only available for one entrance, which at the time was also thought to be sufficient, especially as the area also has DLR and mainline stations nearby."
"The main one is that there has been a substantial population increase in the area, thanks to the existing regeneration as part of the Woolwich Arsenal estate, and with around 800 additional homes already having planning permission on the other side of the road, and this application for 575 more, with plenty more expected in the future. The other is a flaw in the platform area design, as there's a large structural column in front of the escalators,"
A planning meeting will decide whether a housing development above the far end of the Elizabeth line Woolwich station would prevent any future second entrance. The station was added to Crossrail later, funded largely by a developer with council contributions, and constructed on a tight budget permitting only one entrance. Local population growth from Woolwich Arsenal regeneration and approved housing (around 800 homes plus an application for 575 more) has increased demand. A large structural column near the escalators impedes passenger flow. Original passenger distribution assumptions proved incorrect, producing concentrated crowding at the exit escalators.
