Croydon's Youth Engagement Team (YET), essential for supporting youth initiatives, has been closed, prompting criticism from local politicians and young people. The Mayor's report, confirming the shift of services to voluntary sectors, has fueled concerns regarding the loss of trust and consistency established by dedicated YET staff. Gabriella Brown, Chair of the Croydon Youth Assembly, voiced feelings of betrayal, highlighting the importance of YET for youth development. The council's recent consultations are seen as lacking transparency, igniting further discontent among community members about the decision and its implications for young people's future support.
We at the CYA feel very betrayed. We have made it clear from the outset that keeping the YET is by far the best way to protect and enhance the lives of young people in Croydon.
The council’s consultation was criticized for its lack of transparency, with Croydon East MP Natasha Irons accusing the council of taking a backdoor approach.
