Council safeguarding restructure criticised after boy, 16, shot dead in Stockwell
Briefly

Lambeth Unison's branch secretary Jocelyn Cruywagen expressed deep concern over Lambeth Council's job cuts in the Contextual Safeguarding Team, which aims to protect vulnerable youth. The council's proposal to save £424,000 by restructuring the team followed the recent murder of a teenager in the area, heightening worries about child safety. Cruywagen emphasized that the team’s specialized, intelligence-driven approach is crucial amid rising exploitation and gang violence and criticized the timing of these cuts as dangerous for the community's youth welfare. Lambeth Unison is urging the council to halt the changes and ensure no compulsory redundancies occur.
The current service is highly intelligence-led, a specialist role, and staff and Unison think this aspect would be lost and less effective with the proposed changes.
In light of the tragic shooting of [a] young man [in] Stockwell last week and other ongoing issues in society, we believe this is the wrong time to be cutting back this service.
