AVF Developments has proposed three interconnected student accommodation blocks on Woolwich Road, which would create 190 student rooms, following prior plans for conventional flats. Local councillors approved the scheme, noting it was visually superior to previous designs. However, some community concerns arise about height and sunlight obstruction. Planning officials highlighted a growing number of student housing proposals yet also pointed to a significant housing shortage in the borough, aggravating tension between student accommodation growth and regular home needs. Work on the new blocks could commence early next year.
There were already 3,700 new student rooms on their way as part of already consented schemes.
Councillors were more concerned about the increasing number of student blocks coming before the planning committee.
Cllr Gary Dillon raised concerns that 28,000 families are waiting on the borough's housing list.
The previous plans for the site would have provided conventional homes, which have been lost in the updated proposals.
