Bus services in the Mountjoy Square area of Dublin have been suspended for a third evening following a security incident where a driver was threatened by an individual wielding what appeared to be a gun. SIPTU, the drivers' union, has called for urgent action on public transport security in response to the incident. Union representatives demand that drivers refrain from servicing the area after 7 PM until safety measures are agreed with management. There are calls for the government to enhance worker security to prevent further incidents.
At approximately 11.10 pm on Friday night, an incident happened on a Route 13 bus parked on Mountjoy Square, as it waited to begin a journey. The driver was sitting towards the back of the bus scrolling on his phone.
An individual got on the bus with a torch. It seems he believed no one was in the vehicle and may have intended robbing anything he could find in the cab.
I also requested SIPTU member drivers to withdraw services from the Mountjoy Square area immediately... until union representatives meet with management and agree appropriate actions to improve their safety.
The union is now calling on the Government to immediately act on its commitment and begin the establishment of a force that would enhance security for workers.
