Campaigners urge Sadiq Khan to block 'vast' 18-storey office tower in east London conservation area
"A decision from City Hall is thought to be imminent, with Sir Sadiq's deputy mayor for planning Jules Pipe likely to be given the final say. Mr Pipe had raised concerns when given first sight of the plans in April last year but Tower Hamlets councillors went against advice from their officials when they granted planning permission in January."
"They say that the proposals would flatten a series of handsome Edwardian and Victorian buildings at 101-105 Whitechapel High Street and 2-6 Commercial Street within the Whitechapel High Street Conservation Area, leaving behind only the facades at the base of an 18-storey tower The proposed 18-storey office block at the junction of Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Street The development would also require the demolition of the western annexe of Mulberry Canon Barnett Primary School,"
Campaigners, conservationists and cultural institutions oppose plans for an 18-storey, Foster + Partners-designed office tower at the junction of Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Street. Tower Hamlets councillors granted planning permission in January despite officials' concerns and earlier objections from the deputy mayor for planning. The scheme by Alliance Property Asia Inc would reach up to 68m and would require demolition of buildings at 101–105 Whitechapel High Street and 2–6 Commercial Street, retaining only ground-level facades. The western annexe and playground of Mulberry Canon Barnett Primary School would need relocation, raising fears of overshadowing the remaining school. Neighbouring Whitechapel Gallery and Toynbee Hall lead opposition.
