A campaign group, Save Wimbledon Park, is contesting the expansion plans of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), which includes 39 new tennis courts and an 8,000-seat stadium on protected land in Wimbledon Park. AELTC asserts that their development will improve public access to an area previously inaccessible for nearly 100 years. However, environmental concerns have been raised. A judicial review is set for July to determine if the decision-making process was unjust. The expansion aims to enhance facilities and match the capabilities of other Grand Slam tournaments.
The campaign group Save Wimbledon Park has raised £200,000 for a judicial review against the AELTC's plans for an 8,000-seat stadium and 39 tennis courts.
AELTC plans to build on protected land, claiming it will open up an area that has been inaccessible to the public for nearly a century, despite environmental concerns.
The new development could host up to 10,000 spectators, bringing the total to 50,000 visitors a day, significantly surpassing current facilities at Roehampton.
Debbie Jevans of AELTC emphasized the need for Wimbledon to evolve and match the facilities of other Grand Slams to maintain its prestigious position.
