Birmingham's bin workers have rejected a proposed deal that aimed to end their indefinite strike, leaving the city plagued with uncollected rubbish and rat problems. The strike has persisted since March 11, with negotiations between the council and the union, Unite, collapsing. Workers were ballot on a partial pay protection deal, which was overwhelmingly rejected due to concerns over unsustainable pay cuts. Unite's general secretary emphasized the need for government intervention to address the ongoing crisis, calling for urgent meetings and debt restructuring measures to prevent further burden on workers and communities.
"Workers voted overwhelmingly to reject the deal, the union said. The rejection of the offer is no surprise as these workers simply cannot afford to take pay cuts of this magnitude to pay the price for bad decisions."
"The government must now call a meeting with stakeholders to ensure these steps are taken to bring the strike to an end. Workers and communities cannot continue to pay the price."
