Bexley Council has requested Transport for London (TfL) to modify the DLR extension plans from Thamesmead to Belvedere. The proposed extension connects Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside and includes two new tunnels. The council believes that terminating at Belvedere would lead to more housing and employment growth. Although the plans for Thamesmead are well underway, the council asserts that Belvedere would be a more logical terminus due to existing transport facilities. Furthermore, construction could begin in 2028, with trains operating in the early 2030s if funding is secured.
"TfL's decision to terminate the DLR in Thamesmead and not pursue a more ambitious extension to Belvedere is considered a major missed opportunity to unlock significantly more housing and employment growth in the area."
"Belvedere offers a much more logical terminus, comprising an existing transport interchange, at the centre of a large cluster of development sites and on the doorstep of one of the largest but least connected industrial areas in London."
