Almost a fifth of England's rural bus services disappeared in past five years
Briefly

In the past five years, nearly one-fifth of rural bus routes in England have been cut, contrary to government promises to improve transportation services. Analysis by the County Councils Network reveals that rural regions received significantly less funding per capita compared to urban areas, exacerbating service decline. Although funding was allocated under various government plans, the distribution favored cities, leaving rural councils to struggle with diminished service levels. Councils argue they are in dire need of support as bus services are vital for rural communities.
Cllr Peter Thornton highlighted the disparity in bus funding, stating that rural areas received 31 per person compared to 58 per person for urban areas.
Despite government pledges to improve bus services, the County Councils Network reports that rural bus routes have declined by 18% over the past five years.
