In Solo Show, Ben Folds Displays the Dimensions of his Artistry
Briefly

Ben Folds is performing with orchestras and scheduling solo piano dates. He rose to fame as the creative force of Ben Folds Five, blending punk rock and alternative influences. Folds later achieved solo success, expanding into film scoring, production, writing, and acting. He briefly served as an artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra but resigned in protest. His recent album features performances with the National Symphony Orchestra. Folds' tour mixes various formats, reflecting his dynamic artistic approach and ability to adapt to complex schedules.
Folds' subsequent work as a solo artist has elevated his status even further; he has since expanded into scoring for film and television, producing for (and collaborating with) other artists, writing an autobiography, doing a bit of acting, and mounting tours that emphasize an interactive quality.
In 2019 Folds became artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (He resigned in protest when Donald Trump's proxies seized control of the Kennedy Center.)
Folds' current run of tour dates features that mix of solo and orchestral performances, as well as a New York City appearance in connection with a TV special for which he wrote and recorded the music.
He laughs at the suggestion. "It was more confusing when I was playing solo shows, orchestra shows, and two separate band versions on tours, and none of them were advertised what [they] were going to be."
