Fury as Lambeth Council spends 200k on legal battle over Brockwell Park festivals
"A south London council has spent almost 200,000 on a legal battle over a series of music festivals held in Brockwell Park, it has been revealed. In May last year, Lambeth Council lost a High Court challenge brought by residents over the use of Brockwell Park for large-scale summer festivals. The legal challenge centred on Lambeth Council's use of permitted development' rules to allow festivals in Brockwell Park, bypassing the full planning process."
"Campaigners argued the council acted improperly, claiming the events, including setup and de-rigging, exceed the 28-day legal limit. Lambeth Council contested the case, led by Rebekah Shaman of Protect Brockwell Park. The Honourable Mr Justice Mould ruled in Shaman's favour, calling the council's decision to grant a Lawful Development Certificate irrational. Further legal action is ongoing. It comes as a major blow as Lambeth was forced to cancel the County Show last year amid mounting financial pressures."
"But the announcement was met with disappointment from many local residents, with some labelling the decision outrageous and disgraceful. Campaigners for Protect Brockwell Park said it was disappointing to hear that Lambeth Council had spent such a large sum of public money when it is so clearly cash-strapped. This is particularly hard to justify given that the council lost the first legal challenge and then conceded their own appeal at the last minute against our High Court win, they said in a statement."

The dispute coincided with financial pressures that led to cancellation of the County Show and prompted local criticism of the council's public spending.
