Freddie Mercury's iconic ballad "Love of My Life" from Queen's 1975 album commemorates his deep love for Mary Austin, his girlfriend from 1969. Though they parted romantically, their emotional bond remained strong even after Austin began a relationship with bassist Jo Burt. Burt recalls the nervousness of meeting Mercury, who accepted him and valued Austin's happiness. He maintained a close friendship with Mercury until his death, highlighting the profound and enduring connection Mercury shared with Austin, which remained the cornerstone of his life until the end.
"This was the great love of his life, in a sense," Burt exclusively told The Post. "I think he was quite lucky because I was the kind of guy who appreciated the love they had between them."
"He often said to me how pleased he was that she was happy and her life was expanding more than I think probably she expected," said Burt.
"I lived in the flat that he bought for [Austin], and I became very much part of his family."
"Obviously, the initial introduction to him was pretty nerve-racking," he said about meeting a "cautious" Mercury.
