Edward Gillman has been named director of Chisenhale Gallery in east London, succeeding Zoé Whitley. Previously, he directed Auto Italia, a non-profit institution known for its focus on queer studies and social change. In his new role, Gillman will oversee the gallery's Social Practice projects that support artists in creating collaborative work, especially in underserved communities. He will also manage the Commissions Programme, which features new exhibitions. Gillman's experience reflects a commitment to diversity and engagement in contemporary art.
Since 2017, Auto Italia has commissioned 103 artists—including Adjoa Armah, Elysia Crampton Chuquimia and Sin Wai Kin—engaging audiences with new discourses on identity, sexuality and place.
