Transport for London has reported a decrease in traffic through the Blackwall tunnel since the opening of the Silvertown tunnel on April 7, with daily vehicle counts dropping from 90,000-100,000 to 88,000. Deputy mayor Seb Dance suggests this indicates a positive impact of the Silvertown tunnel on congestion. However, critics argue that the equally implemented toll at the Blackwall tunnel is the primary reason for reduced congestion, questioning the validity of claims regarding improved transport options. Bus passengers experienced shorter wait times, indicating some benefits, though skepticism remains around greenwashing allegations.
Seb Dance, London’s deputy mayor for transport, stated, "The data shows that the Silvertown tunnel is helping to reduce the build-up of traffic around the Blackwall tunnel."
Dominic Leggett from the Stop Silvertown Tunnel Coalition argued, "At current levels of traffic, Blackwall alone would be able to operate without congestion, proving that a new toll was all that was needed to resolve the congestion problems there."
