Shoreditch's iconic rooftop tube carriages are finally opening to the public as a new bar
Village Underground in Shoreditch is creating a new rooftop terrace by repurposing London Underground Jubilee line carriages. The carriages sit above a former railway viaduct on Great Eastern Street, and the public will be able to access them for the first time. The rooftop bar will serve pizza and alcohol and will launch on Friday July 3. It will run throughout the summer, open every Wednesday to Sunday. The venue is based in a Victorian-built warehouse that opened as a music venue in April 2007 and has hosted electronic DJs and emerging artists. The tube carriages previously served as artists’ studios and as offices for the venue team.
"The music venue upon which they sit, the Village Underground, is opening up a brand new rooftop terrace. This will be the first time the general public has had access to the recycled Jubilee line carriages on top of what was a railway viaduct on Great Eastern Street."
"The rooftop bar will serve pizza as well as booze and will launch on Friday July 3. It'll be open throughout the summer every Wednesday to Sunday."
"The Village Underground will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. The Victorian-built warehouse opening as a music venue in April 2007 and quickly becoming one of the most atmospheric gig and club venues in the capital, regularly hosting top electronic DJs and up-and-coming artists."
"The tube carriages were previously used as artists studios and as offices for the team that runs the venue."
