Karen's Diner in Islington, known for its intentionally rude service, will cease operations by the end of June, concluding its UK restaurant presence. This closure, attributed to rising costs and increased business rates, ends the brand's permanent locations in England. The diner, which began in Australia and opened in the UK in 2023, mixed dining with performance by training staff to deliver sarcastic and rude service. Moving forward, Karen's Diner will focus on pop-up events following the success of a previous event in Romford.
The closure of the White Lion Street restaurant after two years also signals the end of Karen's Diner in permanent locations England.
Staff were trained to deliver deliberately poor service with a heavy dose of sarcasm and insult, creating a dining experience where, by design, the customer was always wrong.
Rising costs and increased National Insurance contributions and business rates made long-term operations unsustainable for the Islington venue.
Karen's Diner will now focus on pop-up events, with new locations planned across southern England following the success of a Romford pop-up last year.
