After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Pride in London parade is back to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022. The parade will retrace the original route from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall Place, highlighting key locations in the LGBT+ movement. With 40,000 participants from over 400 community groups, this year's event aims to honor the history and activism of the LGBT+ community while fostering solidarity and visibility. It promises to be a significant cultural event and celebration of rights and liberation.
For fifty years, Pride has been a visible cultural protest that brings the LGBT+ community and its allies together in solidarity. It is important to recognise the activists who were brave enough to come out in 1972 to march for our liberation and pave the way for the rights we enjoy today. Early organisers took inspiration from the US civil rights group, the Black Panthers, a reminder that despite their differences there was a collective fight for the oppressed.
The 2022 Pride in London parade will retrace the original route, passing significant locations in the LGBT+ movement, making it not just a celebration but a historical journey.
