Transport for London is planning partial closures on the Piccadilly line over the coming months to upgrade infrastructure for new trains. Closures will enable work on the power supply, tracks, platforms, depots, and sidings, while allowing testing of how the new trains interact with existing London Underground systems. The upgrades also include assessments of efficiency and performance. Previous work has included weight-load testing of a fully loaded test train covering 400km at 68 tonnes, and platform modifications at 119 stations to accommodate longer trains with different door placement. Some closures will also support routine maintenance such as renewing points in the Hounslow area. Most closures are scheduled for weekends starting 00:30 Saturday through Sunday, with some weekday closures during school holidays.
"These partial closures will allow TfL to carry out upgrades to the power supply, tracks, platforms, depots, and sidings while continuing to test the new trains' interactions with existing London Underground infrastructure, alongside assessments of their efficiency and performance."
"Work already completed during previous closures of the line includes weight-load testing of the new trains, with 400km covered using a test train in its fully loaded state of 68 tonnes, and work at 119 Piccadilly line platforms to ensure they are ready to accommodate the new trains, which are longer than the current fleet and have different door placement."
"Most planned closures will take place at weekends, with many starting from 00:30 on Saturday mornings (meaning Friday Night Tube services are suspended) and continuing until the end of service on Sunday. However, there will also be some mid-week closures, and TfL said that where possible, the weekday closures have been scheduled for school holidays, when demand on the network is significantly reduced."
"Some of the closures are also being used to continue routine maintenance work, such as the renewal of points in the Hounslow area. During these closures, the Metropolitan line will run as normal between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge."
