The completion of the third tunnel boring machine (TBM) for HS2's Northolt Tunnel marks a critical milestone in the 8.4-mile construction project running through west London. Launched in February 2024, the TBM named Emily successfully excavated 775,000 tonnes of London Clay and set 17,514 segments of the tunnel lining. Completion of the eastern section will facilitate further progress as the project transitions to the installation of tracks and systems. High water pressure necessitated the use of a reception can to safely manage TBM extraction and maintain integrity during depressurization.
The third tunnel boring machine for HS2's Northolt Tunnel has completed its drive, marking significant progress in the 8.4-mile project beneath west London.
Project Client Director Malcolm Codling highlighted the achievement of safely completing the bore of the eastern section of the Northolt Tunnel, emphasizing the need for continued productivity.
The TBM, specifically designed for London’s soft clay, has removed 775,000 tonnes of material, benefiting from a well-coordinated team of 48 workers.
Completion of this section prepares the way for further developments in the HS2 project, highlighting the ongoing commitment to productive and safe operations.
