One of west London's last pie and mash shops could be forced to close
"I'm devastated. I know the amount I can afford and it's certainly not £64,000. Nobody else is paying these high rents. They go between £30,000 to £40,000... I would not be able to survive."
"Cockney's is a family business that Ruth has operated here for more than three decades, and is loved by our community. It is one of the only pie and mash shops still operating in West London."
"Already, residents tell me they are fed up watching popular local businesses get pushed out to make way for yet more souvenir shops, slot machines, casinos and chain coffee shops."
Cockney's, a legendary pie and mash shop on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, is at risk of closure due to a proposed rent increase from £31,500 to £64,000 annually. Owner Ruth Phillips states this amount is unaffordable and unsustainable compared to typical local rents of £30,000-£40,000. The business has operated for over three decades and serves as one of the few remaining pie and mash shops in West London. MP Joe Powell has sponsored a petition opposing the rent hike, highlighting concerns about local businesses being displaced by commercial chains and tourist-oriented establishments. The shop is known for authentic traditional fare, including suet-bottomed pies and thick liquor served in heavy white china bowls.
