Grosvenor Square to close for a year to allow for a major makeover
Briefly

Grosvenor Square in London is set for a major makeover, starting June 2025, to celebrate its 300-year history. The redesign, led by Tonkin Liu and BDP, reverts to an oval-shaped lawn surrounded by a woodland walk, significantly increasing planting from 140 square metres to 8,000 square metres. The project will also include educational facilities on biodiversity, climate change, and the square's history. Soil decompaction is planned to improve rainwater absorption, while a public consultation favored a full garden closure for efficient redevelopment.
This redesign for Grosvenor Square, initiated by Tonkin Liu and delivered by BDP, aims to replace the existing lawn with a richer, diverse nature-inspired layout.
The new design, which shrinks the central lawn and incorporates a woodland walk, seeks to restore the original spirit of the square from the 1720s.
