Eurostar announced ambitious plans to launch direct train services from London to Germany and Switzerland, with a fleet of up to 50 new trains set for deployment by the early 2030s. With projected travel times of about five hours to Frankfurt and over five hours to Geneva, the expansion reflects a growing demand for sustainable rail travel in Europe. Despite challenges from higher operational costs and inflation, Eurostar saw a 5% rise in passengers in 2024, reaching a record total of 19.5 million across its services, leading the push for increased frequencies on existing routes as well.
A new golden age of international sustainable travel is here," said chief executive Gwendoline Cazenave, adding that customers were "wanting to go further by rail than ever before.
The firm announced plans to launch direct train services from London to Germany and Switzerland with a fleet of up to 50 new trains costing around 2bn.
Eurostar's London trains currently go to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, with plans to increase the frequency of their most popular route.
The company reported a 5% boost in passengers in 2024, with a record 19.5 million passengers across all its services.
