Why are farmers protesting as tractors descend on London?
Briefly

Farmers are preparing for a significant protest against imminent tax changes announced by the Labour government, which will impose a 20% inheritance tax on family farms valued over £1 million, effective April 2026. The e-petition supporting tax exemptions has garnered 149,000 signatures, highlighting widespread opposition among farmers. Political figures, including Nigel Farage and Jeremy Clarkson, support the protests aimed at preserving family farms. Labour insists it will not reverse the tax plan even as farmers express fears over the long-term viability of their farms under these new financial pressures.
Mr Farage told farmers gathered: They have got 100 Labour MPs that are representing rural or semi-rural constituencies. And, from what I can see, Joe Public is getting behind the concept that the family farm should not be driven out of existence.
Labour has insisted it will not make a U-turn on these plans due to come into force next year.
The autumn budget delivered by Chancellor Rachel Reeves extends inheritance tax (IHT) to agricultural land, prompting criticism from farmers.
On Monday, thousands of farmers will stage a protest at 1pm, with last year’s protests attracting huge numbers.
