Heathrow Airport has been forced to close for an entire day due to a significant fire at a nearby electrical substation, impacting around 290,000 passengers and disrupting over 1,300 flights. The outage has caused power cuts in surrounding areas, with the airport unable to determine when power will be restored. Aviation expert John Strickland described this closure as a 'massive dislocation,' comparing it to the restrictions faced after 9/11. The extensive disruption may take several days to resolve, affecting aircraft scheduling and passenger travel.
"Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage across the airport due to a large fire at a nearby electrical substation. Whilst fire crews are responding to the incident, we do not have clarity on when power may be reliably restored."
Aviation consultant John Strickland said the closure of Heathrow for an entire day is 'a massive dislocation to have to recover from.'"
Strickland added, 'We're talking about several days worth of disruption to get the planes recovered and start using them again to move planned and disrupted passengers.' He likened it to post-9/11 when flights were grounded across the US.
Strickland noted, 'Once an aircraft is in the wrong place with the crew, if you're away from home you don't have another crew to suddenly bring the plane and the passengers back.'
