Thousands of residents in South London are advised to keep their windows shut as a recycling plant fire continues to produce harmful smoke after nearly four days.
Firefighters managed to control the blaze early Sunday, but the London Fire Brigade remains actively working on site to fully extinguish deep-seated pockets of the fire while advising locals to stay indoors.
Local residents describe the air as 'toxic' with reported symptoms including eye and throat irritation, prompting warnings from local MP Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan about the ongoing situation.
An Evening Standard news editor noted, 'It's been a persistent acrid smell... The smell pretty quickly becomes overwhelming for those of us in flats unable to open windows.'
