This quiet, leafy north London area could get 10,000 new homes
"Crews Hill, an area with only a few hundred residents, could soon get 10,000 new homes. As reported in the Enfield Dispatch and , Crews Hill is one of two London areas apparently set to become a 'new town' over the next few years. The government's New Towns Taskforce was established in order to build up to 12 new settlements across the UK by the next election, and it reportedly has Crews Hill in its sights."
"Up to now Crews Hill has been mostly known for its garden centres and golf course. The area has a train station - operated by Great Northern - with trains to Finsbury Park, Old Street and Moorgate. It is the northernmost settlement in Greater London. The local council already has plans for the area, earmarking it for 5,500 new homes, but 'new town' status would boost that to a minimum of 10,000."
Green belt land in Enfield has attracted attention because of proposed sports and development projects in the area. Crews Hill, currently home to a few hundred residents, garden centres, a golf course and a Great Northern train station with services to Finsbury Park, Old Street and Moorgate, could be redeveloped into a 'new town' of at least 10,000 homes. Local council plans currently earmark 5,500 homes, while New Towns Taskforce involvement could raise the minimum to 10,000. Thamesmead is another London area under similar consideration, potentially doubling in size and gaining a new DLR stop. Formal announcements are expected soon.
